Donald Trump has reportedly asked Robert Lighthizer, who led his trade war against China, to return as U.S. Trade Representative. Sources familiar with the transition discussions say Lighthizer, a staunch protectionist, was invited to reprise his role, despite earlier interest in positions like Secretary of Commerce or Treasury.

Lighthizer’s alignment with Trump’s hardline trade policies makes him a logical choice, though his potential return may unsettle trade allies and China alike. During his previous tenure, Lighthizer reshaped U.S. trade strategy, focusing on manufacturing and worker protection. His work included revamping NAFTA into the USMCA and implementing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and billions of dollars’ worth of imports.

A veteran lawyer with decades of experience, Lighthizer is seen as a trusted Trump ally, known for his consistent execution of trade policy without drawing ire from his boss. It remains unclear whether he has accepted the offer.
